Our trainees tell
Our dual student Aaron talks about his experiences during his dual study program "Industrial Engineering" at Testo Industrial Services.
Hey, I'm Aaron and I've been a dual student at Testo Industrial Services since 2019. After successfully completing my Abitur in 2017, I was not yet aware of what career path I wanted to take. I therefore decided to work for a year and explore the world a little. Besides working, I was already writing applications to various companies around Freiburg, including Testo Industrial Services. Since I was already very interested in technical subjects at school, I knew that my dual study program should also have something to do with technology. During the job interview, it quickly became clear that a purely technical course of study would not quite meet my expectations. Testo then recommended that I study industrial engineering. After a trial work day and a further interview, I decided to take up the dual study program at Testo Industrial Services as an industrial engineer. Today, I am very satisfied with my course of study and my training company.
My studies began in September 2019 with a practical phase at Testo Industrial Services in Kirchzarten. After an introductory week, I got to know various laboratories during the first practical phase. In the electrical labs, I was shown how to calibrate everything from small multimeters to oscillators with six channels, and soon I was allowed to calibrate some devices myself. I quickly noticed the helpfulness of all the employees. If I had any questions, they were always happy to help and explained the various calibration procedures to me in detail. In the dimensional calibration lab, I was taught how to calibrate rulers, test probes and thread gauges. In this lab, everything revolved around the world of length metrology. Furthermore, I got insights into the fully automated calibration of calipers and dial gauges with a calibration robot.
In January 2020, I started my first semester at the DHBW in Lörrach. I didn't want to commute to Lörrach every day, I decided to live in a shared apartment in Lörrach during the week. Many of my fellow students also lived in Lörrach and new friendships were quickly made.Through various evening events organized by the StuV (student council), it was also very easy for me to get to know new people. The course content was interesting, and I really liked the mix of technical and business subjects. The second semester and all exams of the first semester took place online due to Corona. All lectures were therefore held via video conferencing. These were not exactly the best days during my studies, because of course the direct contact with other students is missing. But also we students will hopefully get over this crazy Corona time soon.
In the summer of 2020, I wrote my first project work in my second practical phase. For this, I developed a concept that should serve to improve one of our logistics processes. In order to understand the process for the first time, I worked in the goods issue department and started writing the first project paper. With the submission of this work, the practical phase was already over and the third semester started online from home.
After my third online semester, I was allowed to go with one of our on-site technicians to the customer for the first time in the following practical phase. There I was shown how the calibration of temperature and climate chambers is handled on site. This was a great change and gave me further insight into the work at Testo Industrial Services.
In addition to the day-to-day work in the various departments, there are many different trainee projects at Testo Industrial Services, which are supervised by trainees and DH students. I always have a lot of fun working on the projects. Last year, for example, the employee newspaper themaTISiert was launched, and I have been working on it since the first issue. I can unleash all my creativity here and create great content.
It's currently half-time during my studies. I am definitely very satisfied with my choice of studies and very glad that I chose Testo Industrial Services as my training company. I find the helpfulness of all employees and the family-like atmosphere very pleasant. I am looking forward to the second half of my studies and my further time at Testo Industrial Services.
